“Wings in the Dark” is a 1935 fictional movie based on the life of Amelia Earhart. Mr. Murphy’s mystery with the main characters, Jake and Laura are on their honeymoon in Hawaii. They are pulled into a mystery in order to solve the murder of one of the flight backers and guards Earhart from an assassin.
The basic premise of the story is that, Laura’s friend Amelia Earhart is in Hawaii at the same time and is set to attempt her solo flight from Hawaii to California. I always find it interesting when authors combines real life events with fictional characters. In this book, Mr. Murphy does a decent job of intermixing the fictional and non-fictional events that are occurring in the 1930’s with relation to Hawaii. I didn’t know much about the Royalists in Hawaii, those who still bemoan the overthrow of their queen. The presence of a lot of Japanese (who also want to spread their influence) was also of interest, as the specter of war was already looming back in their Hollywood tale. However, the romance of the two main characters is more of the forefront and that kind of holds back the story from being a page-turner. (I realize the main characters are on their honeymoon.).
The final outcome of the story and my recommendation is this; if you have read and enjoyed the two previous books about Jake and Laura, then go ahead with this one. If you are new to the series, it might be a good idea read the previous two books in the series. For me, I look forward to the next book in the series.
The book was sent to me by Netgalley for an honest review. I have also posted a review in Barnes & Noble and Amazon under shells journey.
Thanks for reading and review Wings in the Dark.
